Cultural tavern in Stoabloß style – typical Mühlviertel

Kulturwirtshaus Pammer in Hirschbach

A warm-hearted “Griaß di” from host Hubert Pammer is not long in coming when you carefully open the door to the guest room. Immediately, the comforting warmth of the wood stove flows towards you: a familiar feeling of primeval coziness that has been part of Kulturwirtshaus Pammer for more than 300 years.

Inn makes history

The term "cultural inn" in its name does not come from just anywhere. Since 1714, the "Wirt z’Guttenbrunn" in Hirschbach has been continuously operating as an inn. The origins of the building even date back to the 14th century. Groundedness and authenticity characterize the culture with which guests are served. Cooking is still done on the old wood stove, which also heats the dining room. "The stove is just as old as Hubert," says chef Elisabeth Schnaitter with a smile, as she takes the roast pork with the perfect crust out of the oven. The menu not only features traditional Mühlviertel dishes like bacon dumplings but also seasonal specialties: game from the Hirschbach hunters or dishes made from lamb raised on-site.

Smooth beer on tap

The line between the keg and the tap is not even a meter long. This means you need very little carbonation to pour – and that makes the beer tastier and more intense in flavor.” When he pours himself a beer, he prefers a Zwickl. And it tastes best when Hubert has time and can sit down for a “Eichtl” at the table with his many regulars.

Preserving the Old

That the venerable inn in the typical Mühlviertler stone-bare style is still almost in its original condition today is a matter close to Hubert Pammer’s heart. The formerly concrete courtyard now has granite slabs again, he converted the former cowshed into a rustic parlor, and the taproom still features the 120-year-old original furnishings. “In the past, a lot of old things were simply destroyed. Now the connection and appreciation for them are back – and my guests like it too,” Pammer says.

However, his passion for history is not limited to his home: Hubert Pammer finds relaxation particularly in excursions to historical landmarks, primarily in the Mühlviertel. Some of these are even younger than his own inn.
