Home-brewed beer & barbecue specialities
Brewery inn since 2005
Since taking over in 1993, Adelheid and Alexander Sengstbratl have put their own personal stamp on this traditional Mühlviertel country inn. Their decision to brew their own beer played a particularly important role in this. ‘I've always been interested in brewing,’ says the landlord. But it was only after a hunting trip to Lower Austria that the decision to invest in a brewing facility came to fruition. There, the hunting party stopped at a brewery inn which, as it turned out, was run by a distant relative of Alexander Sengstbratl. His great-great-cousin introduced him to the art of brewing, and in 2005 the small brewery went into operation.
Brewing every week
Today, fresh mash is made every week. Two varieties are permanently on tap at the Sengstbratl inn: 4sam-Bräu, a light beer, and Mühlviertler Weizen. Depending on the season, special varieties such as honey beer or elderflower beer are also produced. The beers are very popular with guests, and many also come for tours and tastings, say the innkeeper couple. The range is rounded off with bottled beers from all regions of the Mühlviertel. ‘For example, we get the yeast from the Freistadt brewery. You can see how fruitful cooperation is when you look at the variety of Mühlviertel beers.’
Homemade products or those sourced directly from the region play an important role in both the drinks and food menus. Thanks to the in-house butchery, many delicacies end up in the pan, refined with the restaurant's own honey, among other things. Alexander Sengstbratl's beehives are located in his own garden.
The guests that Alexander and Adelheid welcome are as diverse as the culinary offerings: ‘We have our regulars' table, people come for morning pints or eat à la carte. Many events take place in our hall, and day guests such as horse riders, motorcyclists and mountain bikers who take advantage of the diverse leisure activities in the region also like to come to us,’ say the innkeepers.
