Holiday feeling in Freistadt's old town

Latino Lounge Bar in Freistadt

The Latino has become a real institution in this medieval brewing town. Christian Hoheneder has been the landlord in Eisengasse for over 30 years.

The Latino Lounge Bar wasn't always a casual evening venue: its success story began as a gym with a small bar. Instead of a large selection of Mühlviertel beers, it served protein shakes and fruit juices.

In 2000, the fitness era came to an end, at least professionally speaking. The gym was closed and the Latino was expanded. Today, there are not only various indoor rooms that can be reserved for all kinds of celebrations, but also a spacious roof terrace. It's not without reason that there is an almost Mediterranean flair there: ‘We want our guests to feel like they're on holiday. Relaxing, meeting friends, having fun and enjoying themselves – that's what it's all about,’ says Christian Hoheneder, explaining his philosophy.

Beer menu with over 20 varieties

And there's plenty to enjoy at the Latino – the beer menu in particular is impressive. The focus is clearly on regional products. No wonder, since the Freistadt brewery is only about 100 metres away as the crow flies. But many other breweries in the Mühlviertel hills also leave a lasting impression on the menu and on the palates of guests. Well-known beers are offered alongside beers from smaller breweries, such as The Beer Buddies and Syndicate Brewers. The beer menu is complemented by a selection of international varieties.

Own beer tastings

Christian Hoheneder did not undertake his training as a beer sommelier solely for professional development. He likes to convince himself of the taste when he adds a new beer to the menu. The diverse selection is well received by guests, he says: ‘We always have a beer of the week promotion. We also offer our own tastings.’ Five different beers are served with accompanying snacks.

Sport not only brought Christian Hoheneder to the restaurant business, it also plays an important role in balancing his everyday working life. Whereas in the past he was mainly to be found on the football pitch, today the Thurytal valley is his favourite place and part of his favourite running route. This section along the Feldaist river captivates with its beautiful and idyllic landscape and is home to sights such as the hammer mills and the Teufelsfelsen (Devil's Rock).
