Traditional house with medieval charm
Winding corridors, old vaults and the outdoor dining area by the city wall of Freistadt: at the Hotel and Restaurant Zum Goldenen Hirschen, you can feel the centuries-old tradition of the establishment everywhere you go. The Jäger family's tradition of hospitality is now over two centuries and seven generations old, as the family has been firmly rooted in Freistadt since 1807.
A special atmosphere
Christiane Jäger has been continuing the family tradition since 2014. After graduating from the tourism school in Bad Leonfelden and spending several periods abroad, she took over the family business from her parents Brigitte and Roland. Preserving the special atmosphere of the establishment is important to the representative of the younger generation: ‘The Goldener Hirschen has a completely different flair than a newly built house. Large parts of it are still in their original condition and are listed as historical monuments.’ The loving preservation and care of the venerable building is immediately apparent when you walk through the stylishly decorated corridors and rooms of the house.
Mühlviertel and Bohemian specialities
The tradition of the establishment can not only be seen and felt, but also tasted. For example, at the medieval gala dinner: dishes from the Middle Ages are served, cooked using only ingredients that were available at that time. In general, the kitchen at the ‘Goldener Hirsch’ focuses on typical regional dishes, all of which are freshly prepared. In addition to Mühlviertel specialities and game dishes, there are also delicacies from Bohemian cuisine, such as the traditional Liwanzen.
Beer tradition
Beer also plays an important role in the history of the hotel: the Goldener Hirsch was once owned by the Budweiser brewery and, like all the buildings in the historic centre of Freistadt, it has shares in the local brewing cooperative. It goes without saying that Freistadt beer is the hotel's house brand. However, the extensive beer menu also features beers from other breweries. Expert information is available directly from the manager, as Ms Jäger is a trained beer sommelier.
Special beer-themed offers are very popular with guests: for example, there is a three-course beer menu, where the right type of beer is served with each course. There is also keen interest in the beer packages that Christiane Jäger puts together for her guests: guided tours of the Freistadt Brewery and the Weinberg Castle Brewery can be combined with city tours or excursions to South Bohemia, for example.
