ATCZ163 Enhancement of the cultural heritage of the Schwarzenberg Canal and the natural heritage of the Bavarian floodplain forest
The aim of the Interreg project ATCZ163 “Enhancing the cultural heritage of the Schwarzenberg Canal and the natural heritage of the Bavarian floodplain” is to implement a cross-border measure to enhance and protect natural resources. Thanks to this project, the Schwarzenberg Canal and the Bavarian floodplain are being brought closer to the public.
The most important results of the project include the enhancement of a section of the Schwarzenberg Canal, a cultural monument of international importance, and the improvement of its accessibility to the public. For over a century, the canal was the pulsating lifeline of the region in the border triangle of Austria, Germany, and Czechia. During the “heyday” of the log drive, almost 8 million cubic meters of firewood were transported to Vienna. Today, the cultural heritage of the region is being revived.
Another point is the development and enhancement of the Bavarian floodplain moor in the form of a moor nature trail on a barrier-free footbridge to give visitors an understanding of the moor habitat and the importance of nature conservation. A T-shaped platform is to be built at the end of the nature trail. The platform offers a view of the Moldaustausee lake in Czechia. The platform will also provide information about the history of the border region.
The Interreg project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
