The well was extremely necessary both for the daily water supply - because not every house had its own well
own well - as well as for fires. It can therefore be assumed that
It is therefore reasonable to assume that it is very old - not in its present form, of course, but probably made of wood.
The Taiding also deals in some detail with keeping this water clean: no woman or maid was to wash in the well or cirque or carry "uncleanliness" there;
no one was to let cattle drink from the well; anyone who did either of these things was to be sentenced to 24 d for an offence. The same fine was also imposed on any woman who poured unclean water into the alley.
