The "Brauhaus in der Hölle" was one of the last five breweries in the city centre.
Every citizen of Freistadt had the right to brew a certain amount of beer here or in one of the town's other breweries on their own account. The owner of the house had to be compensated financially for providing the equipment. Over time, however, violations of the brewing regulations became more frequent, and so the citizens entitled to brew beer decided to form a community and brew their beer in their own brewery on their own account. In the middle of the 18th century, the last existing breweries in the city centre were bought up and abandoned for this purpose, and a brewery was then built outside the city walls. The deserted brewery in the Hölle became a coach house owned by the then mayor Josef II. Thury.open to the public, can only be viewed from the outside
