Pfarrkirche Liebenau

The parish church in Liebenau was built in late Baroque style in 1754. The west tower with onion dome and three bays adjoining the tower date from this period.

The Liebenau parish church is dedicated to St Joseph - the foster father of Jesus.
Church services are held every Sunday at 07:30 and 09:30.

The church originally had a flat ceiling.
In 1776, the nave was vaulted over (3 spandrel vaults - barrel vault).
In 1833, the nave was extended by 3 more bays to the east and a chancel with a barrel vault was added.

Small ceiling frescoes now decorate the vault - they show

• the Marriage of Mary
• the birth of Christ
• an angel wakes Joseph and
• the flight to Egypt

The enlarged church was consecrated on 29 June 1836.
The high altar dates from 1887 (neo-romantic).

The baroque side altars date from 1680 and were purchased from the Schönau parish church in 1963 as they were too high when the church was rebuilt. The Madonna and Child on the left side altar is a copy of the Madonna from Riedegg. The statue of St Anthony on the right side altar dates from the 17th century.

At the beginning of 1990, the church was finally extended to provide more space for the faithful.
