"Castle ruins, hiking paths and barge building"
Starting from the “haven” of Hofkirchen im Mühlkreis, as the shipping pier is called fondly by the locals, offers many possibilities for nice excursions: hiking tracks to historical sights, fortresses with legendary importance (for example the ruins of the fortress Marsbach or Falkenstein), impressive steep slopes and lovely villages.
You can marvel at rare animal and plant species at the nature protection area “Rannatal”. The ruins of fortress Haichenbach allow a breath-taking view on the “Donauschlinge Schlögen”. One of the last “Zillenbauer” (barge constructors) of Austria offers rental barges of all kinds for romantic exploration trips on the Danube.
