Parish Museum

Sankt Oswald bei Freistadt, Oberösterreich, Österreich

At the former Community Hospital you´ll learn interesting facts on the pastoral care and welfare system of days gone by.

The Parish School, the Parish Poorhouse and the Christian cult illustrate the importance of the church in the rural life of yesteryear.

The Museum is located in a Townhouse that was originally built in 1614 and used as a Community Hospital later on. The building you see today is mainly of the year 1761 and was purchased by the market town authority of St. Oswald in 1989 to establish a Museum.

From the tiny gatehouse you´ll enter the kitchen that is black with smoke and recalls the simple bucolic life of time long past.

At the Classroom, you can step back in time as well: Children were taught in this old Parish School until 1869, when the Government introduced the stately-run elementary school system.

The Museum´s biggest exhibition space is the Sacred Room with the most valuable exhibits on display. Among the most noticeable features are a late Gothic Bründl Madonna Statue, Baroque Stations of the Cross, a Neo Gothic Monstrance and more striking sacred items.

At the Social Room you´ll get insights into the charitable care that had to be provided by the Parish in times before state-run social services were implemented. Exhibits on display revolve around the themes of the Community Hospital, the Parish Poorhouse and the Catholic Trade Union.
