Fortification

The almost completely preserved fortifications of Freistadt date back to the Gothic period.

You can visit the towers and gates on a tour around the town:

Linzertor: The foundation walls date back to the 13th century.
Bürgerkorpsturm: This tower dates from around 1390 and stands at the south-west corner of the town.
Salzhof: This is the old castle of Freistadt and used to be the castle of the town lords (Babenberg and Habsburgs).
Scheibling Tower: This tower dates from 1444-1447.
Böhmertor: This gate has a Gothic pointed arch gate with two slits for the swing beams of the drawbridge.
Weyermühlturm: dates from around 1390 and is a semi-circular tower.
