"... the water is motionless in it, like a petrified tear" Adalbert Stifter
"Often the same idea arose when I sat on these shores: - as if it were an eerie natural eye, which looks at me here - jet black -, surmounted by the forehead and the brow of the rocks, lined with the lashes of dark fir trees the water motionless, like a petrified tear, "describes Adalbert Stifter in his story" Hochwald "his feelings at the sight of Plöckensteinersee.
The Plöckensteinersee is a magical mountain lake and one of the five glacial lakes on the Czech side of the Šumava / Bohemian Forest. The lake served as the main source of water for the Schwarzenberg Schwemmkanal. Above the lake is Adalbert Stifter monument. From World War II to 1990, this area was inaccessible to the public.
Today, beautiful hiking and biking tours lead to the lake and to the Stifter Monument, where hikers can enjoy a beautiful panorama.
