St John's Church in the south of the city is the oldest church in the city in terms of its building fabric.
It still shows Romanesque influences. It served as a baptistery. In 1385, the Freistadt citizen Hans der Taschner donated the choir and the chancel fixtures; his tombstone is in the choir.In the 14th century, the town's infirmary was built next to the church. The church was profaned for a long time, but was restored and consecrated as a church in 1857.
