MIST! Rethink textile waste!

July 21, 2026 - March 30, 2027
Special exhibition room of the Textile Center Haslach

How can new textiles be made from old clothes? How can waste generated in the textile industry be transformed into future-oriented products? And what ideas are there for making good use of materials resulting from overproduction?

Every textile is the result of a complex process: from fiber extraction and yarn production to fabric manufacturing and garment finishing, there are many individual steps that involve extensive knowledge of materials and manufacturing techniques.

Around 220,000 tons of textile waste are produced in Austria every year. Around three quarters of this ends up directly in residual waste. Not only are all the skills that go into them disposed of, but also vast quantities of raw materials and valuable resources. A large proportion ends up in Africa, where the ecological and social consequences of global textile consumption are particularly drastic.

The exhibition "Mist! Rethinking textile waste" provides an insight into a young generation of textile designers and activists who are meeting all these challenges with courage and new ideas. They are developing concepts that respond to fast fashion with swapping, repairing, upcycling or zero waste strategies. Young designers are exploring the resource "waste" for new possibilities and eliciting a refreshing new aesthetic from it. The exhibition shows innovative recycling ideas and provides future-oriented examples of contemporary design that demonstrate how residual materials can become valuable raw materials.
