Mühlviertler Ölmühle (Mühlviertler Oil Mill)

Haslach an der Mühl, Oberösterreich, Österreich

Linseed oil - Mühlviertel’s liquid gold

The old mill has produced precious linseed oil for more than 600 years using traditional methods. Linseed oil has always been an important ingredient of typical regional delicacies.
When visiting Mühlviertel, you should not miss sampling Mühlviertler Leinölerdäpfel (potatoes with linseed oil). The oil, which is made from flax seeds, gives this dish its special, slightly tangy flavour.
In the past, many flax fields could be found in the region, flowering bright blue in the summer months. In those days, the weaving industry still prevailed in the region and flax fibres were used to produce delicate linen fabrics. The Mühlviertler Ölmühle and a few weaving mills still successful today have stood the test of time.
For more than 200 years, the Koblmiller family has been the owner of the milling business. In order to produce the hot-pressed oil, a method is used which has been passed down for generations. The flax seeds are milled into flour, mixed with water and gently roasted. Only then is a hydraulic press used to produce the oil which is subsequently filled into bottles. Due to its high content of unsaturated omega-3 fatty acids, linseed oil is one of the highest-quality edible oils. It has a very positive effect on the gastrointestinal system and can also be beneficial with respect to raised blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. You can therefore enjoy Mühlviertler Leinölerdäpfel with a completely clear conscience.
Please note: Cold-pressed linseed oil as well as hemp oil, sesame oil, thistle oil, poppy-seed oil and sunflower oil are also available at the Ölmühle.

Price per person:
Tour: € 2.50
incl. cheese sandwich with linseed oil € 3.20
