Freshly tapped beer and home-style cooking – a stop that's well worth it

Stadler Inn “Zur Haltestelle” in Lasberg

The towers of Weinberg Castle can be seen in the distance when you arrive in Siegelsdorf near Lasberg. Here, where the Feistritz flows into the gently babbling Feldaist, lies the Stadler family's Gasthof zur Haltestelle inn.

A quick glance at the surrounding landscape is enough to understand why the inn is nicknamed the “hiking inn.” The gentle hills typical of the Mühlviertel region rise from the banks of the Feldaist River, which winds its way toward the Danube. The signs marking the hiking trails point in all directions: the Dornach castle ruins, the Hoh House on the Buchberg, and Weinberg Castle are just a few of the worthwhile destinations in the area.

The Gasthof zur Haltestelle is not only the ideal starting point for such activities, but also offers a place to rest during or after hiking. The Stadler inn also hosts Sunday morning drinks and regulars' tables. The hall, which can be partitioned if required, can accommodate up to 150 people.

Four generations work together in our family business. It all started with the senior innkeepers Mitzi and Sepp Wittinghofer, who bought our inn in 1968. The two handed over the business to their daughter Erika and her husband Walter Stadler at the beginning of 2000. After 20 years as innkeeper, Erika handed over the business to her son Manuel on January 1, 2020. Together with his wife Bettina, he is now running the business in its third generation.

Regional ties

The cuisine consists of down-to-earth home cooking, accompanied by seasonal specialties ranging from wild garlic and pumpkin to game weeks and fish specialties during Lent. The family attaches great importance to the origin of their products and refers to their suppliers: the eggs come from Lasberg, potatoes from local farmers, and meat from Gallneukirchen.

With the Ratsherr, the Zwickl, and the Midium, there are three types of Freistadt beer always on tap. “The fourth tap is reserved for seasonal beers, such as Junghopfenpils or Bock,” explains Erika, a trained beer sommelier. The selection, which is complemented by a range of bottled beers, is very popular with guests.
