These are farms and rural buildings whose façades are made of exposed granite stones that are only sparingly grouted with lime. The original reason for this construction method was that lime was scarce in the Middle Ages. However, stones were available in abundance throughout the region. The farmers inserted the largest possible stones into the masonry, but did not plaster them. This style of building is only found in the Mühlviertel. The stones were worked exclusively by farmers and not by stonemasons. The predominant farmstead form is the three-sided or gate-walled courtyard. The courtyard space between the three wings of the building is enclosed by a wall with an integrated entrance gate, usually curved round at the top.
