Pürnstein Fortress, towering high above the valley, was built in the late 10th century.
The name of both - the castle and the settlement - derives from the Birchenstainer Dynasty, one of countless noble families who have owned the castle over the centuries.
... The Starhemberger Dynasty held the most protected fortress of the entire province.
... During the Peasants´ Revolt fierce battles have been fought.
... And the imperial district Court had its seat here.
... Poverty reigned as well.
... Great festivals were held, too.
Pürnstein has many stories to tell!
