An international view beyond the pub horizon

Foxi's Schlosstaverne in Freistadt

At Foxi's Schlosstaverne, Mühlviertel tavern culture meets international influences. A glance at the menu reveals that it goes beyond the proverbial boundaries of Austrian tavern cuisine: Asian curries, falafel, and tarte flambée are just as much a part of the menu as fried chicken, Beuschl (liver and sweetbreads), and ox goulash. For Christoph Rudelstorfer, these are not contradictions, but the perfect combination. “This is our idea of modern tavern culture, where you can try new things and discover different flavors. We also offer a wide range of options for those who want to eat vegan or vegetarian,” he says, describing his culinary philosophy.

Despite the international influences, the ingredients come from the region as far as possible. “We focus on quality products, and almost everything is homemade,” says the trained chef and waiter. Christoph is delighted that the menu is very popular with guests: “We welcome young and old, our regulars as well as visitors from further afield. Many simply feel at home in our living room atmosphere.”

On the road as a flying chef

The international influences at Foxi's Schlosstaverne are rooted in Christoph's professional past: after completing his apprenticeship, he signed on as a flying chef at Do & Co. “There, I prepared multi-course menus for business class on long-haul flights,” says the young restaurateur. Most of the flights were to Asian countries, but also to the USA and Canada. Eventually, he returned home to Freistadt and took over his father's business.

Over 100 types of beer

Beer plays a very special role at Foxi's Schlosstaverne: with well over 100 different types – ten of which are on tap – the selection is enormously diverse. Mühlviertel beers play the leading role here: in addition to beers from the better-known breweries, there are also many types from small breweries on offer. Beer Buddies, Thor Bräu, and Leonfeldner Bier are represented, as are the Syndicate Brewers. “Guests are interested in beer and want to try new things,” says Christoph, explaining the huge selection. At the bar, you can chat with friends, enjoy delicious specialties, and have a wonderful evening.

Foxi's has something for every taste. Traditional Austrian cuisine, Asian curries, award-winning beers and whiskeys, as well as regional juices and non-alcoholic beverages. Enjoy the sunshine in the outdoor dining area or the cozy atmosphere in the winter garden.
